On May 29, EFL hosted a webinar around new concepts of Co – Living. A trend that is gaining track, as the housing crisis in many European cities threatens the life chances of citizens. Affordable housing is much needed in cities like Amsterdam, Paris, London, Milan and Berlin. Forms of cooperative housing can be part of the solution; particularly when there is a good working legal and financial framework. The Amsterdam Southeast neighbourhood (Bijlmer) is an example of a grassroot initiative where an existing flat on the nomination for demolishment, got a second life for do-it-yourself residents. Here the story of Martijn Blom, real estate consultant, opened the webinar.  Based on this example, the webinar highlighted a short history of city development. and redevelopment of Amsterdam Southeast and the particular position of black residents (Surinam, Caribbean, people of African roots), presented by Wouter Pocornie.

The last part of the webinar was dedicated to the research performed by Dr. Darinka Czischke from Delft University of Technology. She gave a complete overview of all possible forms of cooperative and collective housing and living, based on her book “Together; Towards Collaborative Living”. The book can be downloaded for free HERE.
