When cities are ‘full’: topping-up, filling-in, and office conversion strategies for affordable housing (FR, NL): Our speakers from France and the Netherlands present strategies for new affordable housing supply in cities with few new sites. We examine projects converting vacant offices, topping up exisiting residential buildings with new floors, adding extra modular units to sites, and more. Join our discussion on key considerations within residential densification projects, such as winning the support of existing residents by improving facilities. Assist. Prof. Gerard van Bortel from TU Delft will share experience with infill and conversion projects in Amsterdam, as well as recommendations from his recent “Room for Housing” Report, an integrated approach to the Dutch housing shortage that sets out four pathways for action. Lucie Lescudé and colleagues from Paris Habitat will explain how infill and conversion strategies, used increasingly in Paris, are changing social housing practice.
