The article explores cooperative and collective housing as a “third way” between social renting and private ownership in Europe. It shows how models such as housing cooperatives, co-housing and Community Land Trusts can deliver long-term affordability, resident empowerment and stability. While well established in countries like Germany and Austria, the article highlights key legal and financial barriers elsewhere and outlines how EU-level support and innovative financing could help scale this model across Europe.
